the story behind the symbol…

Not too many folks has asked me about how I came about Apropos Creations’ symbol and the ones that I have told said I should write about how I came about it.  So here it goes.

   Back in 2009, I was searching for a tattoo that is unique but yet meaningful to me.  I really love angels so I started searching but to no avail, I couldn’t find one that suited who I am.  But I kept searching for anything from crop circles to zodiac signs.  Still nothing.  August 2009, the family and I went to Cincinnati for my husband’s family reunion.  That was fun.  I met his cousins and the rest of the extended family and close friends.  I also met my husband’s brother.  That was very exciting and now, his brother is due to visit in March which is the next month.  We also visited Covington, KY which is where my husband was born.  I saw the street where he grew up for his first three years and it was very touching.  We ate at a place called Covington Chili which he had raved about due to his grandmother taking him there when he was young.  We drove through the singing bridge as my MIL (mother in law) calls it, waved at the Cincinnati Reds’ stadium, The Great American Ballpark and went to the Underground Railroad Museum.

While we walked around the museum, there was an area for children to do crayon rub-ons.  They had a podium of words and symbols and their meanings.  I examined the symbols and this symbol  caught my eye and when I read the meaning, I knew this was going to be my tattoo. 

This symbol is from West Africa and they are called Adinkra symbols.  This particular symbol is called “Odo Nnyew Fie Kwan” which stands for the power of love.  It also meant, love never loses its way home.  The meaning is really what  captured me.  Needless to say, after my husband finally convinced me to start my own wedding and event planning company a month later after our visit to Ohio, I decided to use Odo Nnyew Fie Kwan as part of my company and became the symbol.

I am sure that in your mind somewhere lurks the question, “did she ever get the tattoo?”  No, I still have not yet gotten inked.  I have been so busy that it was not my priority to get it done.  My priorities as it stands today is my family and then my business.
